A new ten year residency permit for UK nationals living in Malta will be one of the 36 action points that the Government of Malta has in mind in case a no deal Brexit scenario occurs after March. This means that all British nationals, who amount to approximately 13,000 will have to apply for a new residency permit.  The permit will be free of charge and valid for 10 years.

UK citizens who before the 29th March 2019 resided in Malta, will receive a special status identifying them as persons who had taken up residency in Malta when the UK was still part of the EU and thus retaining all their previous rights.

Those UK nationals who come to reside in Malta after the 29th March 2019, in case of a no deal Brexit, will also be able to apply for a 10 year residence permit.  Such individuals will be placed in their own classification and will not be considered as third country nationals.

This should put the British residents’ minds at rest that their rights in Malta would not change.
